Monochromatic aberration As the name suggests the monochromatic aberrations are a result of the discrepancy when we considered our incoming ray to be having a single wavelength of light. We discussed that there are two kind of aberrations. Photo-credit: physweb dot bgu dot ac dot il We will study the phenomena of primary aberration in optical systems under this limit. A lot of physical processes exhibited by light such as reflection and refraction can be understood by this approximation. Primary aberration through ray optics: geometrical or ray optics is defined by a limit on wavelength which is small enough for the path of light wave to be approximated by straight lines called rays. At-least going half-way through the lecture and stopping short of the derivation will do well. You might want to have a look at lecture - I, linked above, to get a basic view of the ground on which we are discussing this topic. ( Lecture - I: “Optical Aberrations” ) click to read the lecture on optical aberration In our last lecture in this series we discussed the phenomena of aberrations that arise because of a discrepancy of the first order theory and the third order theory as depicted by the Maclaurin series, where we saw that first order theory represents the so called paraxial optical systems.
